Hoover PTA President, Jennie Ott, called the meeting to order. November minutes were approved.
Principal's Report:
Mrs. Kehoe announced the Hoover has again won the Run for the Schools. There will be sledding parties by grade level to celebrate. She also shared that Hoover's ITBS scores came back and are "awesome!" Details to come at another meeting.
Special Speaker:
Our new Superintendent, Steve Murley, shared with us his views on his role in the District and the community. He emphasized that he believes that his job is to listen and understand what parents and students want the district to be and to try and make it happen. He shared details of some projects he implemented in other districts, and the possibility of implementing some of them here. He is focused on trying to discern what type of skills students are going to need to succeed in the future and to make sure they are learning/practicing those skills.
Part of his talk centered on the challenges that implementing No Child Left Behind impose on the district. He also announced that we now have the capacity to do "late starts" for inclement weather instead of just cancelling the day or early release. He shared his intention to revisit district boundaries more frequently, but committed to providing at least a full year's notice of any announcements of transitions. During a question and answer period, topics ranged from his position on Charter Schools, the possibility of implementing "Project based" learning models, technology in the schools, and the new Music addition to City High.
Treasurer's Report, Dave McDowell:
The Treasurer reported on the success of Hoover Night at El Dorado, and announced another one would be planned for sometime in April.
DPO Report, Angie Bywater:
Announced the next meeting to be held at Lemme to discuss budget impact on elementary school size. We also need to determine the potential honorees for the Scholarship Reception.
Upcoming Events:
Planning for Family Enrichment Night is underway for February 3, 6:30-8:30. Volunteers are still needed for set up/clean up.
Next meeting will include voting on PTA matters, including some spending decisions. Please try to attend.
Respectfully submitted,
Kristal Gibson, PTA Secretary
