October PTA Meeting Minutes

Hoover PTA President, Jennie Ott, called the meeting to order.

Principal's Report:

Mrs. Kehoe announced Hoover's new custodian, Jeremy Meyer, who was the former head night custodian at West High. Because the District has cut some custodial hours, Hoover will have to adjust some evening activities and make some changes to the Hoover cleaning schedule.

ITBS testing is in full swing. She encouraged attendance at the Run for the Schools over the weekend. She also announced that Hoover is almost ready to launch the new classroom websites that the teachers have been working hard at creating.

Mrs. Kehoe also asked for parent volunteers to help in the office and lunchroom. She specifically asked for help during the lunchtime from a little before 11:30 to a little after noon. At this time, parents are not needed for playground supervision.

Teacher Reports:

On 10-14 the kindergartners will be going on a field trip to Kroul's pumpkin patch. Volunteers are also welcome to work with children with flashcards.

In the library, the students have been working on computer skills.

President's Report, Jennie Ott:

This year's Fall Fund Drive was announced. It is a request for direct donations with 100% of the funds going to the PTA. Parents should check to see if their employers will give matching gifts to Hoover. Information going out to parents in next Hoover Headlines.

Planning for the Family Enrichment Night is beginning. This year will have a math and science focus. A volunteer sign up sheet was passed.

Vice President's Report, Jordan Brannaman:

The VP gave a report on Hoover's participation in the City High Homecoming Parade. Many thanks were given to the family of Carrie Karr for the Walking Tacos and treats. Since it was so successful, plans were made to expand this next year-- with additional volunteer help.

The Family Potluck was also discussed with thanks to Sara Eisenberg for organizing this year. It was discussed that turn out might be improved if a different evening other than Wednesday is used, due to many religious services that evening.

Treasurer's Report, Dave McDowell:

The Treasurer reported deposits for the Scholastic Book Fair and the Homecoming Walking Tacos. He also encouraged parents to designate Hoover and use the Target Credit or Debit Cards for additional donations to our school.

New Business

The President introduced the "Helping Hands Fund" in response to concerns raised last meeting. A petty cash fund is to be created with a confidential log to assist in meeting short term, unexpected financial needs for students for food and clothing. The log will be shared with Ms. Bender, as a possible indication of ongoing need in the Hoover community. The amount of the fund will be periodically revisited. Individuals may give directly to this fund by specifying by check with a note on the memo line that it is for the Helping Hands Fund. Cindy Meis made the motion for the creation of the fund with $150 PTA start up funds. It was duly seconded and passed unanimously. Thanks were given to Shelley Maxwell for raising the issue to the PTA's attention.

DPO Report, Angie Bywater:

Encouraged all to attend with free lunch served. They are held the second Wednesdays of the month from 11:30 - 1:00. The next meeting is at Garner and will discuss "What is the Grant Wood AEA? Two volunteers are needed for a district reconsideration committee for curriculum.
