In response to many attempts to alleviate our current traffic difficulties, district officials have agreed to AGAIN open the City High driveway north of Hoover to help with drop off and pick up.
Starting Monday, February 22, the First Avenue gate by City High’s track and football field will be opened 45 minutes before the start of school and 45 minutes before the end of school. This will give parents another safe option to drop off and pick up students. PLEASE NOTE: Parents may NOT continue on this driveway around City High. You must exit on First Ave. after you drop off or pick up!
Safety is STILL a concern, as parents continue to stop along Court Street and drop off kids. PLEASE discontinue this practice immediately. I would also encourage all parents who park on 2nd Street to begin to use the City High or Our Redeemer Church option instead. Crossing Court on foot at the crest of the hill is just not safe. I myself have witnessed a child almost hit when crossing with a parent. Unfortunately the parent was not holding the child’s hand. I have also witnessed parents waving the children across the street. This can NEVER happen. Your child’s life is worth far more than the few minutes this unsafe practice will save you.
The parking lot to the west of Hoover is intended for STAFF ONLY. Currently we have 60 full time staff members and 70 parking spaces. This does not account for our practicum students, student teachers and volunteers. Please understand that these staff members arrive between 8:00 and 8:30 each day and leave at 3:00. Therefore, parking must be available to them in the morning and the lot must be clear for them to pull their cars out at 3:00. This continues to be difficult, as parents are parking and walking their children into the building in the morning.
The ONLY drop off and pick up options are as follows…
- Students can and should be encouraged to WALK to school. Remember the days…we all did it when we were kids! :)
- Please use Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, which has a crossing guard for safety! Just drop off students and they can safely walk up the hill to school. (It builds independence!)
- Please use the City High driveway. Easy access even if you have to park!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kehoe
