Hoover PTA Meeting
Thursday, April 14, 2011
6:30, Ms. Dobyns' classroom
Hoover PTA President, Jennie Ott, called the meeting to order.
After teacher's reports from Ms. Cummins, Dr. Graham, and Ms. Madden, Mrs. Kehoe shared her hope that Hoover will have four new Smart Boards in the classrooms next year. Two will be purchased with funds from the instructional budget, one from a foundation grant, and she was requesting that the PTA purchase another one. Several teachers requested them in their classrooms, and Mr. Kozier 5/6, Ms. Ferentz 3/4, Ms. Cosman 3/4 and Dr. Graham 2nd have been selected to house the new boards.
She introduced our special guests from Van Allen Elementary, Christine Bangsund and Margaret Jacobson, certified instructors in the use of "Smart Boards." They demonstrated for us on the Smart Board in Ms. Dobyns' classroom how easy they are to use and how students can use them not just the teachers. Mrs. Kehoe also announced that Ms. Jacobson has been hired to be Hoover's Instructional Coach next year, and her expertise with Smart Boards will be greatly valued. It was an informative and entertaining demonstration.
Treasurer's Report, Dave McDowell:
The state of the current budget was discussed. Revenue was collected from Family Taco Night, Track Meet parking, and direct donations. In lieu of cash, it has been decided to accept proceeds from the book fairs as "Scholastic Dollars" which increase the percentage of profit we make. Payments were made to Lifetouch and art supplies for the Autistic classrooms.
New Business
Those present voted in favor of approving the proposed teacher requests. Paul Makalsky requested funds to purchase a tuba stand. Ms. Kehoe's request for the purchase of a Smart Board was also approved.
There was also discussion regarding the state of disrepair of Hoover's student laptops and what can be done.
DPO Report, Angie Bywater:
The next DPO meeting will be held at Horn Elementary May 11th where the discussion will be about NCLB updates. All are invited to attend. A reception will be held at City High to honor the scholarship recipients given in the name of Shannon Thomas, retiring from Hoover, and Kathleen Friested, a fantastic Hoover parent volunteer.
Upcoming Events:
Next month's meeting will concern filling committee and board vacancies for next year. Those interested in increasing their involvement for next year may contact any board member or the volunteer coordinator, Liz McIntyre. Please attend to vote on the candidates.
Respectfully submitted,
Kristal Gibson, PTA Secretary
