Pull Your Pull-Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House!!!
Did you know that by pulling the tabs off your pop and soup cans, collecting and bringing them into the Hoover collection bin, you can help families of children with critical medical conditions? Every pull tab you collect and bring in goes toward supporting Iowa City’s Ronald McDonald House, a 31-room “home away from home” for families of children receiving critical care services at UIHC.
Last year, Hoover Student Council collected 100 pounds of pull-tabs for the Ronald McDonald House! This recycling program generates more than $10–12,000 a year for this charitable organization. The pull-tab is valuable and worthwhile to recycle separately from the can because of its higher density aluminum. Collected pull-tabs are sent to a recycling center operating under national contract negotiated by McDonald’s. McDonald’s also provides transport of tabs to the recycler.
The Iowa City Ronald McDonald House is paid by the recycling center according to the pounds of pull-tabs collected. They use the funds for general operating expenses, such as electricity, to support the house as it houses an average of 1,700 families per year.
Students can use pull-tabs as the basis of math and science lessons, and Teacher Lesson Plans can be found at: www.rmhciowacity.org/pages/pulltabs
Hoover PTA has also supported the Ronald McDonald House through the years by preparing, delivering, and serving home-cooked meals for guests staying at the house. If you are interested in helping with this worthy cause, contact Volunteer Coordinator Liz McIntire at 338-1741 or liz4cy@msn.com
